Practical Resources
Welcome to Louisville and the wonderful world of teaching! While the early mornings, sacrificed evenings and weekends, and diminishing sense of self can make you feel like a martyr for the cause (“overwhelming” is an understatement), your new life outside your classroom should be the least of your concerns. That’s why we include this section on practical resources to make maneuvering around your new home and your respective school district a little less stressful, and maybe even a little more fun. It’s important to have a life of your own away from your students, if only to burn off stress on the treadmill or to enjoy a vitamin rich home-cooked meal with friends if only to retain your sanity. (And you may need these novelties after the twenty boxes of doughnuts that greet you at every in-service and in the teachers’ lounge!)
In this initial entry, Amy Bigelow has ambitiously gathered a list of resources in Louisville that create a comprehensive guide to the city. She also includes resources for teachers in Jefferson County, as well as for graduate students at the University of Louisville’s Department of Education and Human Development. These tips should help any new teacher navigate the city and their respective school districts. Because many Alternative Certification candidates will be placed in the surrounding communities or the Archdiocese, we have also added resources that can assist those who teach in these districts.

Question and Answer: Louisville Resources
Q: How early does the TARC (Louisville’s city bus) start running?
A: 6:30 a.m., but it depends on the route. It’s also important to check what time the line stops running – some busses stop at 6:30 p.m.
Q: Say we want to take our kids on an event, not sponsored by the school, what should we do if kids don’t have bus fare?
A: Direct them to the school secretary or book keeper; schools keep stacks of bus passes!
Q: What are the legal proceedings for car registration if you are from a title-holding state and are still paying off your car?
A: You will need to go to the County Clerks office to get a title request sheet to fax to your car’s financer. They will in turn send your title to the Sheriff’s Office. They will contact you when they receive it. It takes about two weeks and sometimes requires pestering phone calls.
Q: Can you turn off the grade visibility component of JCPS online?
A: Yes. You can set your defaults.
Q: Can you work with kids outside your subject area in ESS (Extended School Services)?
A: Yes.
